The Importance of Heat Transfer in Combined Cycle Power Plants

At NEM, heat transfer is a core competence that supports our role in advancing sustainable energy. By capturing and reusing waste heat through systems such as Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) and condensers, we help reduce fuel consumption and emissions—contributing to more efficient, flexible, and grid-stable power generation.

As the energy sector shifts from coal and oil to natural gas to a future with hydrogen, effective heat transfer remains essential. Our technologies are designed to adapt to changing fuels, supporting the transition toward carbon-neutral energy systems.

Heat Recovery Steam Generators as Efficiency Enablers

Combined Cycle Power Plant Technology

Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP) represent the most efficient way to convert chemical energy into electricity. While standalone gas turbine power plants typically achieve efficiencies of up to 40%, integrating a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) dramatically increases overall performance—pushing plant efficiency to over 64% today.

This improvement is remarkable: by adding an HRSG and a steam cycle, efficiency increases by about 50%—without burning any additional fuel. The HRSG captures waste heat from the gas turbine exhaust and converts it into steam, which drives a steam turbine to generate extra electricity.

NEM is a global leader in this technology, with unmatched expertise in heat transfer. With around 1,000 units installed worldwide, NEM delivers highly efficient and reliable HRSG and condenser solutions for modern power plants.

The video above explains the fundamentals of how a combined cycle power plant operates and highlights the critical role of the Heat Recovery Steam Generator and condenser in achieving superior efficiency.
